Discovering the History of Forte Mare Fortress
Nestled in the charming coastal town of Herceg Novi, Montenegro, the Forte Mare Fortress was constructed in the 14th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Its primary purpose was to safeguard the coastline from invaders and protect the local populace. Over the centuries, the fortress has undergone various renovations and expansions, reflecting the intriguing development of military architecture. Key historical events include its strategic significance during the Ottoman expansion into Europe and its role under the Venetian Republic. Today, Forte Mare stands as a proud symbol of the area’s rich heritage, showcasing impressive stone walls and stunning views of the sea. It is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, part of the Venetian Works of Defence from the 15th to 17th centuries.
Visiting Forte Mare Fortress
Forte Mare is located right in the heart of Herceg Novi, less than a 10 minute walk from the bus station. You can easily find the entrance directly across from the stone bridge. Opening hours in the summer months are 7 days a week from 9:00 am to 8:30 pm.
Taking the Bus from Kotor to Herceg Novi

Driving to and Parking in Herceg Novi
Getting to Herceg Novi can be a bit of a challenge, especially during the busy tourist season, as the roads are often narrow and winding. Once you arrive, finding a parking spot might take a while, so it’s best to be patient or consider taking the bus instead. We recommend using a paid parking lot to avoid fines, and parking outside the Old Town is a great option that lets you enjoy a nice stroll. On our last trip, we ended up with a small dent in our car, a little souvenir from navigating those tight streets!
